A regional print shop asked us for one top-5 ranking. We gave him six #1s instead.
The question
July 2015. Michael Weber, owner of Minuteman Press New England, wrote us one line:
"How will I do with that? Is it a competitive word? Do you think that I can get a top 5 ranking?"
One keyword. Top 5. That was the ask.
We ran a different play.
The play
Most local SEO programs pick one keyword and pray. We built a geographic search monopoly.
Instead of chasing a single term, we mapped every print service query a buyer in MMPNE's territory might run across three state markets: Springfield MA, Western Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Then we stacked the optimization across all of them in parallel. Monthly ranking reports. On-page tuning. Google Webmaster Tools driven refinement. Every month. For seven plus months.
One keyword gets you one door. A full geographic matrix locks down the neighborhood.
The receipts
Six #1 Google rankings. Held simultaneously.
- brochure printing springfield ma
- envelope printing springfield ma
- envelope printing western mass
- letterhead printing springfield ma
- green printing company connecticut
- green printing company massachusetts
Four more in the top 3.
- promotional products springfield ma · #2
- copying printing services springfield ma · #3 (up 4 positions)
- poster printing springfield ma · #3 (up 4 positions)
- printing services western mass · #3 (up 2 positions)
minuteman press enfield ct: #1 position, 22% CTR. Measured via Google Webmaster Tools. One in every five people who saw it clicked.
Bing did not get spared. Multiple #1 Bing rankings mirrored Google, including envelope printing western mass, green printing company connecticut, and green printing company massachusetts.
The business impact
Rankings don't pay the bills. Conversions do.
Online conversion requests climbed across three consecutive months:
- August: 5
- September: 6
- October: 8
That is a 60% lift in documented inbound requests inside 90 days.
Traffic quality confirmed the targeting was right. Organic visitors bounced at 51% against a 64% site-wide average. The right people were showing up, staying longer, and hitting the request forms.
The client confirmed it
August 2015, one month in:
"Yes I have been watching and the numbers do look good."
Michael Weber, Owner, Minuteman Press New England
Six months later the pattern held. From the December 2015 report summary:
"Our campaigns have been doing great and we are in a great position with all the KWs we have focused on."
The takeaway
A regional print shop asked if we could move the needle on one keyword. We handed him a search monopoly across three state markets, six simultaneous #1 rankings, and a 60% lift in inbound requests inside 90 days.
